HIV Family Initiative

The HIV Family Initiative is a Project championed by the Mitahato Education and Development Fund in partnership with The Kijabe Health Unit in Githunguri District. Our Mission is to improve the quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients by providing them with accessible Medical Care, promoting Food Security, Quality Nutrition and Sustainable Income.

This Project target 1600 families affected by HIV/AIDs in Githunguri Sub County. Through the support of Kijabe Health Unit, we have identified 120 families with an immediate need for food security and medical attention; these families will be enrolled in the first phase of the project.

Project Intevention:

  • Establishment of Vegetable Kitchen Gardens - We are supporting the families to grow heathy vegetable gardens to boost their nutrition and for food security. Already, we have set-up gardens to beneficiary families and trained them to grow spinach, grain amaranth, nightshade, ethiopian kale, climbing beans and other nutritious foods
  • Transportation Costs to the Health Unit- In addition to transportation costs we provide for needed medication and unfunded medical care.
  • Installation of Underground Poly-Tanks- Water is always a challenge. Our Project provides the tools needed for harvesting rain water for use in the kitchen gardening project.
  • Psychosocial Support- We are working with the affected families in clusters, to counter stigma and educate them on living positively. An HIV/AIDs Education campaign has already been extended to schools and churches as a first line measure to fight against new infections, especially amongst the youth. HIV is now the #1 cause of death for Kenyan Youth under the age of 24.
  • Small Business Startup Support We also support the families to start indigenous chicken and Bakery business by providing breeding stock and Baking oven on annual leasehood.
