The Teaching Farm

TOUR OF THE TEACHING FARM
The goal of the MEDF Teaching Farm is to empower the farmers with the knowledge and training they need to make informed decisions about alternative horticulture and husbandry to the traditional farming they have been practicing.

HORTICULTURE
MEDF promotes production of at least 20 varieties of horticultural crops. We assess the viability of their production and markets and evaluate their economic models.Fruits like strawberry have an insatiable market and a golden opportunity for the youth in Kenya for self-employment and livelihood improvement. Tomato trees (Ribena) is another crop with a unique niche in the market with fruits attracting a high demand and good prices in the market. The management of tomato trees is minimal and the trees can be in intercropped.

We also promote value addition of the fruit into Ribenna juice. Other crops that we promote include but not limited to: Groundnuts, Cojets, Capsicum, Sunflower, Tomatoes, Pineapples, Kales, spinach, beetroots, arabicum flower, cow pea, amarathus spp, just to mention a few We are working closely with Waruhiu Agricultural Training Centre under the ministry of agriculture and livestock located in our district. The centre has provided us with hybrid varieties such as dwarf avocado and the dwarf mango.

FODDER CROPS
To cut down on the cost of industrial feeds which are expensive to smallholder farmers, we promote the following fodder crops while retaining proper nutrition for animals: Guatamara, Calliandra, Nappier, Desmodium and Sweet potato vines.

  • RABBIT BREEDING - Rabbit breeding has been very successful in the recent past and we are working with the "New Vision Rabbit Breeders" and Waruhiu Teaching Centre to re-establish both the market and the breeding program.
  • GOAT BREEDING - Dairy Goat breeding offers a viable alternative to Dairy Cattle requiring less land and labour. MEDF is working with the Ministry of Livestock to establish a Regional breeding programme for Dairy Goats incorporating AI technology
  • KENBRU/KIENYEJI CROSSBREED - We hatch Kenbru/Kienyeji crossbreed chicks which mature within 4 months attaining a minimum weight of 4kg and also advantageous because they feed less and avail them to farmers at an affordable price. The kienyeji is resistant to diseases while the Kenbru provides for excellent laying.
  • PIG REARING - We have best pig breeds that are very prolific and have a good mothering ability .Our success in this project has been as a result of quality breeders and best management practices.
  • BEE KEEPING - Honey production is a good and viable alternative farming opportunity. Quality honey has an excellent local and export market which Kenyans cant satisfies. Through partnership with players in this industry, we will establish bee farming for honey production, processing, packaging and marketing. We will promote bee farming to farmers to ensure that we satisfy the market.
  • FISH FARMING - We have established green house Catfish farming using over the ground fish ponds in our teaching farm. We use locally available materials to construct thestructures which makes it affordable to smallholder farmers. We intend to incorporate aqua hydroponic technology to optimize on every resource in the farm.
