HIV Family Initiative

images
By the end of 2009, 1.5 million of Kenyans were infected with HIV/AIDS and 1.2 million Kenyans children were orphaned by HIV. 800,000 people lost their lives to the dreaded virus. Various bodies have been funding the fight against HIV in Kenya, with U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR) providing over half Billion dollars and The Global Fund contributed around 100 million dollars in 2009.

Corruption and lack of transparency has led to many donors withholding funds and also limited the impact the funds should have in the society. Though there is reported decrease in number of infections countrywide, the worrying trend is that there are more women aged between 15 to 24 years getting infected every year.

Many of those infected with HIV/AIDS faces challenges varying from weak health to stigma in the society. Many poor who are infected by HIV have been having problem in maintaining a healthy diet and transportation to health centres. MEDF is partnering with a branch of Kijabe Hospital in Githunguri Kiambu County to establish kitchen gardens for the families infected with HIV and also educate them to ensure that they maintain proper diet. We already have a family who we are working with and we have planted more than 50 tree tomatoes in their compound.
